L'étang de l'Abbaye

The lake at Paimpont Abbey is an ancient manmade dam created by the building of a dike at the foot of the small town of Paimpont. Now it serves as a stage set for the magnificent 13th-century abbey. The lake covers an area of more than 50 hectares and is fed by countless streams, most of them flowing out of the surrounding forest. The beauty spot is accessible from the shores of the lake on the outskirts of Paimpont, the most popular spot with tourists and already equipped with amenities for water sports. The absence of any footpath running right round the lake has the advantage of preserving the natural environment.
